I'm using version 3.6.25 of scid, which has some nice advantages over 3.6.1-2, the version you get through synaptic.

    Nothing fatal, but sometimes the arrangement of windows will have shifted if I go to another program and then switch back to the Hiarcs window. I should add, though, that there's some odd bugginess in the Hiarcs interface.

    I may just stick with that because it gives me the ability to take cbh or cbf files and convert them to pgn, so that I can import them to scid. In the mean time Hiarcs 8 installed normally under Wine, and has a scaled back but still powerful version of ChessBase database functions. Not wise to do this on a work computer, even if I removed the program right away. Well, problem is that I currently don't own any Windows computers, but perhaps I can find a friend who will let me use theirs. Copy the CB folder and a particular DLL as specified in the given link, and transfer them to my Ubuntu computer. I found these instructions and this thread. I had my old ChessBase program CDs lying around going to waste.
